Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Lesson
Frequently Asked Questions
What ages do you teach?
We teach students from birth through adulthood. Our early childhood program serves the youngest learners through age 6. Instrumental lessons typically begin between ages 4 and 8, depending on the instrument and the child's developmental readiness. We actively welcome adult learners of all ages, including complete beginners.
What instruments do you offer?
Classical guitar, pop/rock/jazz guitar, piano, ukulele, upright bass, electric bass, violin, viola, cello, drums and percussion, and voice. We also offer music theory and ear training as a standalone subject.
How much do lessons cost?
Tuition is paid monthly on the 1st of the month, covering all lessons scheduled in the calendar month. Contact us for current rates as pricing varies by lesson format (group vs. individual) and duration. Group lessons offer the best value for beginning students.
Do you offer group or private lessons?
Both. New students begin in small group lessons (maximum six students) and advance to individual lessons after reaching a curriculum milestone. This structure is a deliberate pedagogical choice: group lessons build stronger foundations for most beginners. See our Group Lessons page for the full rationale.
Where are lessons held?
We offer both in-person lessons in Fairfax, VA and online lessons anywhere. Contact us for current location details and scheduling.
What if my child does not know which instrument to choose?
Schedule a trial lesson and we will help your child explore options. Many young children start with ukulele or piano because of the low physical barrier to entry, then transition to their preferred instrument as they grow. Our early childhood program is also an excellent way to develop musical readiness before committing to a specific instrument.
Do I need to own an instrument before starting?
Not necessarily for the first few lessons, but you will need regular access to an instrument for practice. We can advise on instrument selection, rental options, and appropriate models for your budget and level. Do not purchase an instrument before consulting with us; many beginners buy instruments which are wrong for their needs.
What is your make-up lesson policy?
Students who miss a lesson may attend a make-up lesson if space is available. Make-up lessons must be scheduled in advance. There are no refunds for missed lessons. Please see our Studio Policy page for complete details.
How much should my child practice?
Practice expectations vary by age and level, but consistency matters more than duration. A beginner practicing 15 focused minutes daily will progress faster than one practicing 60 scattered minutes twice a week. We help students and parents develop realistic, effective practice routines.
Can adults really learn an instrument from scratch?
Yes. Unequivocally. Adults bring intellectual capacity, self-discipline, and motivation younger students lack. The challenges are different but entirely manageable. See our Adult Learners page for a fuller discussion. The short answer is: you are not too old.
What is the Musi Method?
The Musi Method is our proprietary curriculum integrating visualization, solmization (solfege), music theory, performance development, and ensemble experience. It draws on proven pedagogical traditions adapted for modern students and tools. Every student at Musi Academy, regardless of instrument or level, follows this curriculum.
