Contemporary Styles Built on Solid Foundations

Pop, Rock, Jazz, and Commercial Guitar

Pop, Rock, Jazz, and Commercial Guitar

Not every student wants to play Bach. Many come to us wanting to play their favorite songs, jam with friends, write their own music, or join a band. We teach all of it, and we teach it well, because our instructors understand the theory and technique underneath every genre.

Our contemporary guitar curriculum covers chord vocabulary from basic open chords through jazz voicings and extended harmony; strumming and fingerpicking patterns across pop, rock, folk, country, and R&B; improvisation over chord changes using scales, arpeggios, and melodic development; reading chord charts, lead sheets, and tablature; electric guitar technique including bending, vibrato, palm muting, and effects usage; and genre-specific styles from blues to funk to metal.

Jazz guitar receives particular depth at Musi Academy. We cover comping, walking bass lines, chord melody, and improvisation over standard forms. Students learn to hear and outline chord changes, develop melodic vocabulary from the jazz tradition, and build the rhythmic feel which distinguishes competent jazz playing from merely knowing the right notes.

What distinguishes our approach from a typical guitar teacher showing you songs is we teach the principles underneath the songs. When you understand why a chord progression works, you can apply this understanding to every song in that style. When you understand scale-chord relationships, improvisation becomes expression rather than guesswork. This is what classical training and music theory give you, applied to the music you want to play.
